St. Margaret's Chapel. The oldest building in Edinburgh. It was built around 1130 by David I as a pirvate chapel for the royal family, and dedicated to his mother, Margaret. She died in the castle in 1093, devastated by the violent death of her husband, Malcolm III, in an ambush. The chapel was converted into a gunpowder sore in the 16th century, and the stone-vaulted 'bomb-proof' ceiling dates from then.
